Being illiterate, I had not heard of the novel but can say it was a heck of a story. This film is multilayered and filled with meaningful flashbacks that tell us the story of Theo Decker.
It begins with an explosion and the loss of his mother. His guardian, Kidman, takes him in and becomes a family member until his real father, Luke Wilson, show up and takes him to Las Vegas. Theo is damaged by the loss of a near-perfect, upper-class life in Manhattan. While in Manhattan he makes friends with an antique dealer who makes an impression and becomes a life-long friend.
This is a long but compelling film and for me, it's the best I've seen so far this year. Young Oakes Fegley, Nicole Kidman, and Jeffrey Wright standout. I can see Wright as a Best Support nominee--he is always good.
