Marketing, of course, has been pushing actors' talents in this kind of film for years. Paul Newman and Robert De Niro both had boxers they trained with praising them, saying they could have been successful boxers. Right! Of course, reflexes and training are only part of it, the ability to take punishment and be unforgiving about giving it are critical. In figure skating, it's jumping that proves difficult, plus the hard-won ability to trace complex figures, perfectly. Needless to say, Robbie ain't got them skills. (I'm not talking about those ridiculous spinning jumps, either; just a simple small elevation from the ice takes years...).
Having lived in Oregon during the time of the story, I came away with an understanding of Tonya. It's a class thing. Hard for a non-working class person to "get it."
