RE: You expect Harding to dish her own film's star?

Posted by RGA on May 21, 2021 at 18:53:28:

"therefore, stating Robbie could be this-or-that obviously is bogus, it's puffery for the film marketers."

Bullshit.

I live in Hong Kong (not exactly a skating hotbed) and I see plenty of 10-12-year-olds doing spins and doubles. Most reasonably athletic kids who put the time and effort in will be able to be decent figure skaters or ballet dancers - elite level or Olympic level no but good yes. These girls were doing jumps and they don't get the training they would likely get in the west.

"Tanya was known for jumping and "muscular" performances, not grace--- her body type was very different from Robbie's"

And so it was nice to watch the comparison video where Robbie looked and sounded much like Tonya even though Tonya was a "butch." Robbie played the "Redneck Butch" quite well which is why she was nominated for best actress by the Academy Awards, BAFTA, and Screen Actor's Guild - her peers who are professional actors nominated her. I think they know more about film and acting than forum posters.

"It's also a poor film, making a conniving, disgusting person into a victim wherein the real victim, Kerrigan, is made unsympathetic."

LOL - Kerrigan wasn't portrayed at all unsympathetic as the film wasn't called the Nancy Kerrigan story. Nancy was barely in it. She wasn't portrayed as mean or narcacistic.

I know it is beyond your ken to understand but people are not all either evil or good. A person can be disgusting and vile and ALSO sympathetic in that there is this thing called "extenuating circumstances" which doesn't excuse the behavior but it can explain it and people can sympathize with it. It goes back to Shakespearean tragedies where a high-born person has a great fall.

In the modern era, the high born today, arguably, are celebrities in sports or movies or in some cases business/politics. Tonya was a ruffian redneck blue-collar class skater in a world populated by the wealthy upper-class girls who have parents that can buy them $5000 dresses and outfits and probably pay for "finishing school" to get them the right look and genteel walks and movements. I absolutely believe the "skating community" would not want their precious snooty community to be sullied with the likes of an oil-changing Tonya Harding redneck.

Given Figure skating's history of suspect judging - it certainly would not surprise me that the "elite" class would down her marks to allow prettier more elegant, and inferior, skaters to win.

Adding in that mother, that boyfriend, and the total whackjob counter-terrorism expert (holy crap that was a real guy!) into the mix as guys who would be front row at a Maga rally somewhat makes her story "plausible" - true or not is based on the people who have done the investigative work on her along with police reports and admissions by some of the players in the story after the fact.

But if Tonya didn't have that crazy bitch mother and abusive boyfriend things would have been different - so that is the tragedy - someone who could have it all was surrounded by and grew up with disgusting people - and they rubbed off on her. The film didn't paint Tonya as some lovely girl you want to take home to mom.
