While I disagree...

with the overall assessment I can totally understand your take on this film and a pre-negative bias against Michael Bay. I feel that the bias against the directors however tend to have forumers seeking fault in a extra special attentive way and tend to be more forgiving of directors they like.

Look this film has huge problems -- it's a good 25 minutes too long and most of that is in the final act where it's just monotonous. It has uneven performances some playing over the top others playing it dead serious, the transformers don't have a lot of lines which, judging by what they say, is probably a very good thing.

We're not a whole lot different on this film but I felt the charisma of the leads and the effects were enough to recommend it...I walked out with a smile and that ain't bad.

***/***** which is a marginal thumbs up.

Speaking of thumbs I think this film could have really been superb handled by a better director and better editing.

Roger Ebert IMO hits the review on the head PERFECTLY in my view
