We watched Empire of the Sun last night on a 104" screen. Was I impressed?

Heck, yeah! Wish I had seen it in the theatre. This must be Spielberg's best film, hardly a wrong turn and lacking the ususal Spielbergian (negative) signatures. Well-written too! (Not Spielberg.)

And the kid. Damn! Seemed like a natural, not an actor at all, one of those children a lucky director occasionally finds on the street. So imagine my surprise when I learned at the end who it was -- Christian Bale, fully formed at an early age.

At one point early on, after the kid got into the clutches of the two Americans, I innocently asked my buddy (who had seen it before), "Who's playing the John Malkovich role?"

Oh.
