The production design of this film is awesome when you consider that all these ancient classic buildings had to be built, some complete with interior and able to shoot from four sides but for so much money spent I have never seen so much miss-direction in a film. The new DVD release is worthy of note. Weak script! It is obvious that most everybody in film wanted to feed at the Bronston money trough and it is very evident. Guiness plays a very convincing Aurelius if rather stiff. Plummer is a magnificent Commodus but this thing doesn't move and draggs in too many scenes. Only if it had been in the hands of a David Lean, or John Houston, or John Ford. GRH
