Doesn't matter who wrote it; the line belongs to the character (unless he was quoting Roth, which would be far too unlikely).

But now, rethinking that line (and the character) you may be right and I may very well have initially missed the point due to the Kingsley character
being such a liar and coward - so full of so much failure that the desperation for that line to ring true would be dire.
