As the movie continues the viewers' impression of the main protagonists keep changing. And finally, the impossible becomes inevitable.

PS: now that I've seen the movie (Fios on demand) I think I'll read the short story. I found a free pdf of it at the link below. It will be interesting to see how much the movie makers deviated from the source material.
