The 17 pounder was a fine cannon. All the cannons in the 70's mm rage were tank killers. The problem with the Firefly was it was a half assed attempt to arm it with a tank killer weapon. The turret was to small and they had to solid mount the weapon minus the recoil assembly. Everytime it fired it recoiled the entire tank. And, the Sherman was still a Sherman. It was more mobile than the Tiger and Tiger II but the Germans had figured out early on how to take them out.
