'Ben Is Back': A road best not traveled . . .

Posted by Billy Wonka on January 17, 2019 at 11:41:45:

So, Ben makes an unexpected arrival for an overnight stay with his family. The only person halfway glad to see him is momma (Roberts). His sister Ivy (Newton) is not happy neither is his stepdad Neal (Vance). His two step-siblings are joyed due to their young age. Oh, and the dog is thrilled to see him.

What seems like an honest attempt by an addict to be happy for a Christmas Eve slowly turns into a revealing horror of addiction and it's subsequent ramifications that have reeked so much damage in the past.

Julia Roberts puts on a star performance as the mother who refuses to give up after all others have. Hedges is good as the charming addict trying to do better. Well written and acted this is a very uncomfortable look at how one addict can inflict dysfunction on an entire family.

3 wonks for story, actors, and education on addiction
1 wank for not resolving the story
