Surround sound for the hard of hearing

My brother and i thought about getting surround sound for our parents since their hearing has deteriorated to the point they either have to sit right in front of the tv to hear (and see) or jack up the sound. Will a surround sound system generally allow them to hear better since the sound will encompass them or will it not make a difference?
