as any director who has ever lived, comes this fascinating tale of two great friends who, much to the chagrin of their wives, become passionately addicted to chess. Meanwhile, the British East India Company, with the full support of the British forces, is taking over the entire country. The king of the last area province, facing a certain and violent defeat, mulls his fate. He is a king who realizes his lords have grown accustomed to leisure--- and he himself is an accomplished poet and writer, not a man at arms.
Not only an affecting look at friendship, the film also exposes the tortured relationship between subject and empire.
The acting is superb, featuring 3 of India's greatest actors in the lead roles.
Streaming on MUBI along with many others of this master's films. It may also be available on Kanopy as are several others of his better films.
Follow Ups:
According to IMDB it's currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. It's one I haven't seen so will do so this evening.
Big fan of Ray here. Haven't seen that one, but will check Kanopy. Thanks!
I would recommend Mahanagar and Charulata if you have seen Apu triology already.
Bill
Both excellent. Another great one IMO is "The Home and the World". Although not generally considered one of his masterpieces, I really like "The Stranger".
brilliance. Indeed, the first one is one of the most heart-rending of tales. Streaming on Criterion Channel. I believe "Youtube" may have some of his films, as well. MUBI and Kanopy (free from most libraries' streaming services) also have some of his films.
I cannot think of a great artist anywhere near his stature that is as unappreciated.
