This hand-to-hand combat, wherein no prisoners are taken, takes a toll on them off the battlefield where, finally, their violent crimes against civilians cannot be tolerated by commanding officers. Consider this more of a thinking man's war film and you should find much to like, including the startlingly realistic performance of the lead, Philippe Torreton.

I just saw it several weeks ago and also was impressed with the battle scenes. Watched all of his films currently on Criterion that week, including Coup de Torchon which I had previously seen.
Couldn't help noticing all the films seemed to be centered on death!
