Forbidden Planet MUST figure in all this, no?
Just saw 'Transatlantic Tunnel' from 1935 ......WAY ahead of its time......and a movie I'd never heard of before. 1935!
The Alastair Sim version is good, but I tend to prefer the 1930s version starring Reginald Owen and a YOUNG Gene Lockhart.....
Something about the honesty of presentation gets me....
Too much is never enough
Follow Ups:
Re: Alastair Sim version, the additional story line expanding on what Dickens wrote helped me to better understand how Scrooge became the monster he was before the spirit visitations. Sim does get a bit over the top at times, but I'm able to overlook that.
Forbidden Planet would be on my list of science fiction movies. For me, Blade Runner. takes the lead of must see flics in that genre. Transatlantic Tunnel is a new one for me, I'll check it out. Thanks.
"Solaris" must be on any "greatest Sci-Fi" lists, I'd argue. Only the original Russian one.
All the 'categories' are to me, somewhat offputting.
is something like the Gene Wilder take on Willie Wonka a fantasy?
So I'm less concerned with calling something 'X' or 'Y' than simply 'Is it well done?'
My brother didn't like SciFi. I couldn't get him to sit thru Forbidden Planet! 'THEM' was out of the question. Yet he found 'The Martian' to be engaging.
The reason I find categories weird is I can't figure out where MANY movies fit. For example? Clint Eastwood did 'Unforegiven'. Western? Morality play? Fantasy, even? Historical Drama?
Directors Cut of Blade Runner is terrific. That my be yet ANOTHER category: 'Dystopian Future'. Stuff like Arnie in Running Man (the?) and Idiocracy (funny stuff) both qualify.
No, for ME, categories is a tough sell. Just entertain me!
