A true gem, on Cirterion channel.
Follow Ups:
amazing performance. Herbert Marshall is fine, as always, but it's Mitchum who shines brightest. How can "Cape Fear" not make the list, too? "Out of the Past" is yet another Mitchum noir that has to rank at the very top.
All those big rodeos actually still exist. Like pendleton etc. Some of those trailer courts probably still around (cowboy lifestyle for hauling horses and camping out).
junior bonnor is another western set among the rodeo lifestyle, some say it was Steve mcqueen's best work.
We utterly enjoyed that movie - a well told story and great acting by Mitchum, Deborah Kerr and Peter Ustinov.
a cult favorite due to the cars and chase scenes back in the late 1950's. Not one of his best by far. A few interesting facts. He sang the theme song and his son played his bother in this film.
...
Criterion is streaming thirty of his films currently. I had seen most, but rewatched many. Now have seen thirty-four of his films and would be hard pressed to choose his best. Certainly the ones already mentioned in this thread, like Farewell My Lovely and The Lusty Men, rank near the top.
Night of the Hunter and Ryan's Daughter really showcase his range. Interestingly, both films were met with harsh criticism when first shown, yet have soared in appreciation in recent years.
Heaven Knows Mr. Allison... A close runner-up though would be River Of No Return.
My vote is for Mitchum's pitch perfect portrayal of Phillip Marlow in "Farewell My Lovely." It's usually available on one of the streaming apps.

I like Mitchum and have not seen this.. I did check out Track of the Cat on Criterion and Home from the Hill. I think he reminds me of my father some. From the same era and general appearance I guess.
