This was a lot better than I expected, and honestly after the reviews, I was expecting pretty good. I was not as impressed as many others by the original way back when, decent, maybe the 58 that RT gave it is about right.
Would I give this 97 per their rating for Maverick? Not quite. Some parts were a bit overly expected (as would be... expected), some parts a bit corny, some way beyond possible. But overall an enjoyable popcorn flick on supposedly the biggest outdoor screen in North America (my daughters 11 & 8 dwarfed).
Follow Ups:
Bombing an Irani enrichment site that could actually exist. Not so subtle, eh?
Going in to a foreign country, bombing a depot... WWIII? And then everyone hoots and hollars on the ship? Where are the fighters coming out to do some payback?
Like I said, popcorn flick, way better than the original, fun... don't take it seriously.
Both children are home for the summer (23 & 21) and wanted to see it - but wanted to see the original first-
I remember seeing it when it came out - but can't remember the fracas in world politics that preceded it-...
Pretty predictable story line and outcome - but a great suspension of disbelief - and got me caught up
Same with the new movie -
but not much else to say-
Except my son thinks it is based on the Israeli Bombing of the Iranian nuclear facility....
Good popcorn - glad we got discount tickets-
Happy Listening

I never saw it way back. The acting and charicaturizing of cartoon pilots as junior high punks made me puke. The sound track was pure kiddy music. It was a partial rip off of "Officer and a Gentleman", Richard Gere, made a few years prior, including Cruise showing up on a motorcycle. Can't get much more plagiaristic than that. And always the local girl to be won.
If anyone wants to see "Maverick", I recommend that they do not go back for a primer.
and less than zero interest in seeing it.

I don't know it's not like the US Military or the US Police force are only letting in "academics and you know "thinkers."
They're letting in borderline school bully apes who get off on killing. portraying them as steroid-filled baboons isn't the worst thing in the world - and they do present the Goose types too.
Not that I think either Top Gun was particularly good. You basically come for the planes. Which tend to be more 3 dimensional than the characters.
But then remembered my original thoughts on the first movie, my memory of the overall plot I think was best.
Spoiler, but the second in a lot of ways repeated the first. The motorcycle, the girl in the bar, singing... I enjoyed it, but it could have been better yet IMO.
