Regal just opened a 24-screen movie house about a mile from my home. What do you think I can see there? How about 20 showings of Star Wars and 4 showings of similar 13-year-old sex and violence movies. I haven't been yet, but my neighbor has and he tells me the screens are small, the volume astonishingly loud--to the point that many were stuffing popcorn napkins in their ears, the picture good, but not great, and the sound bleed-thru from the show next door distracting.The blockbusters and their ilk here in the 'burbs advertise they carry 50,000 titles: yea, they have 20,000 copies of Rocky XXXIX, 18,000 of Batman, 32,000 copies of some Segal movies and --of course, some airobic work-out tapes (soft porn).
Victor, do you rent tape, go to the city to the "art cinema", or rent DVD? Do you do it thru the mail? Can you tell us where to get such good fare?
I haven't bought a DVD because I fear there's nothing I want to buy and see more than a couple of times, maybe, but hey--if you can rent thru the mail a DVD with titles such as you've mentioned--clue me in! I love foreign film. When you watch them enough times you don't even see the subtitles. My fear is the Americanization of the world will slowly force all filmakers to stop surprising/challanging us. In a few years the only films made around the world will be for the 13-year-old boy market. Every film has a predictable happy ending, you can see it comming in the first frame. Some guns appear, big explosions, hero boy gets his ass kicked, naked girl with the wrong crowd, hero boy kicks ass, car chase/crash, more explosions, everybody gets laid. roll credits. buy soundtrack.buy action figures. Hey, that sounds like Henry V ! Now that was a good teenage boy flick! Is that on DVD?
Dear petew: You are wrong, someone or thing gets killed and/or blowup in the first 5 minutes, THEN the rest follows. Gee you figure you could get a formula right ;-))

I'll le you in on my little secret: it is TLA. They are locate don the 4th street about one block north from the South St. They have an unbelievable selection of foreign and other good movies. We usually go there on a weekend and get several movies, usually on VHS tapes - they have only very few DVD's, normal pop garbage mostly. I then ship them back via FedEx.
If you like good movies then there is no place like the TLA. It used to be a movie theater showing all those art movies - but they closed it down.
As far as I know, they have three or four locations - there might be one near you. I don't know if those other locations have as good a selection. Thay also have a very educated staff - try THAT some place else, who are very helpful. Yesterday we watched the "Breaking Waves". Recommended.
In short - a great place, go there.

You are right about most of this. That's why we go to the TLA. What a typical American doesn't see is that there are still many, many good movies made both in the US and elsewhere. They are usually not shown here in most theaters, however. Some are not shown, period.
Go to the TLA and get their catalog and just start enjoying. They have nice deals on package purchases.

where I lived until Muti quit the orchestra. Then the TLA closed. I know the place you mean on South St. The last time I was there I had front center seats to see Acoustic Alchemy. We had picked up some Thai and ate it while they played (how rude). God I miss the city. If only it were kid friendly I'd move back in a second. But then the jobs have left too. Yes I remember the TLA video store near our apt. bldg. door, right past the Latimer St. deli, where you could buy a six-pack of real beer: Samual Smith, Pilsner Urquell, DAB, ...and a few blocks away was Town Pizza, the best pizza East of John's Pizza in Frazer (which is still the world's best pizza, provided you go to John's place and not his disrespectful son's place across the street)...And now they have a film festival for a week...
Hey Victor, you know Philadelphia? You know the joke about William Penn? Here's the real test: try and spell the name of the expressway that comes in from the turnpike in King of Prussia. Only a real Philadelphian knows that.

just in case someone's reading our mail:for a real test of driving skill, the Wissahickon Drive (I refuse to use the stupid names some politician changed that have no sense, no meaning, no local color, Lincoln, Columbus and Kelly can go back where they came from) during rush hour, preferably in the rain, both up and down stream. Mario himself fears to tread here. Just a reminder, the speed limit is only 25 (ha!).
the joke about William Penn: Starting at the art museum, take a drive towards city hall, and keep your eyes on William Penn (don't worry about where you're driving, nobody has insurance in the city). Let me know when you can see his charter.
and it was the other video store further down past the WAWA that closed. But you are so right, the staff there is excellent. They must watch movies more that I do, which is really sick. I loved their employee picks of the week. You know, when I patronized them, I can't ever remember even seeing one of the blockbuster hollywood movies on display. I don't think they even bothered to carry them. Don't you love it when they take a box out of your hand and say, "Don't get that...here, you'll like this much more."?
