From Ep 1, the Sith were thought to no longer exist until Darth Maul revealed himself to the Jedi. The question is: "Why shouldn't they exist? Did the Jedi previously try to wipe them out?" When the Sith return to wipe out the Jedi in Ep 3, they get their "Revenge."
