I think you are being too hard on uncle Burt, although his acting CAN be heavy-handed, and Anna is of course always magnificent, but the film is a snoozer - I could never finish it, and I tried more than once.

I can think of oodles of great actors who CAN'T act: Richard Widmark, Robert Mitchum, John Wayne, Charlton Heston to name a few. Great screen presence has nothing to do with acting ability. Never has, never will. IMHO....peace, warrenP.S. I love Burt, BTW. Have seen most of his pictures. Doen't mean he can act. Atlantic City (near the end of his life) was his best acting.
and I think that eclipses his performance in Atlantic City; much as I love these both
