Well jazzdog,
I haven't figured why exactly. Maybe because my mind wanders for a second or two once in a while, or maybe to reafirm what I thought I was hearing during some mumbling talk or a noisy scene. Anyways with DVDs, I can go back to see what was said.

I have been doing this for years.
I just feel more comfortable with the subtitles on. Kind of like reading a book or transcription. A couple times I've watched an entire TV show with the sound turned off. Then again I've sat back in a recliner with my eyes closed and just listened to an entire show (like Frasier).
