In Reply to: Toshiba 42H81 vs. Samsung HCM422W...Recommendation, Please... posted by Chris_GA on July 04, 2002 at 11:14:45:
I have the Toshiba 40H80, the previous generation version of the Toshiba you're looking at, and I love it. It’s a great RPTV, because it’s large enough to produce a good sized picture, yet it’s not so large that it destroys your soundstage or dominates your room. The 40" Toshiba RPTVs have consistently gotten rave reviews from magazines and have a loyal following of home theater enthusiasts. The picture is breathtaking; progressive scanned anamorphic DVDs look stunning, and the stretch modes for 4:3 material are quite effective. I personally would stay away from Samsung. The only other RPTVs I would consider besides Toshiba are Mitsubishi and Pioneer, but they don't make smaller sets, and aren't as good a value as the Toshibas.

I have the Tosh 50H81 and I absolutely love it. I haven't experienced a single problem in the six months we've owned it. I would take a Toshiba over Samsung any day of the week. BTW, the Toshiba 57HX81 got rave reviews in an eight HDTV roundup in Home Theater magazine. It missed winning by a whisker but it was the easy value leader since it was around $2000 cheaper than the winning Pioneer.
