I used to have my center placed high and angled toward the listening area, sat on top of my hd tv. The way my system is laid out and after some custimization, I was able to place it at the same height as my L and R speakers and what a difference. the sound "panned" nicely around the room, dialogue was clearer and more true to the movie because it is "in your face"

Unless there is no alternative, place it at ear level with the L and R.
