I heard that is is a high-end DVD player that features technology used by DVDs in the price range of $2,700. I read this in the magazine Far Eastern Economic Review that had something about the launch of Sony's boldest product to date. TO those unaware, the P2 will be able to play audio CDs, DVDs, as well as the old playstation discs of course.Now is my question: will this be any good as a DVD player? How about as a CD player? Anything close even to entry-level audiophile quality?
PS2 aint going to be $250...more like $350...besides, who would want a console ahs there dvd player anyways?
there are reasons that $2700+ DVD players cost that much; good parts and thoughtful implementation cost money. My assumtion is as good as yours, unknown. My prediction on the other hand is that it will not be as good as a $X CD player or a $X DVD player. (with PSX2 being $X)
I've been reading a lot about ps2 ....Just one small thing will make ps2 better than dvd players in the same price range ... it can do progressive.
In demos ps2 has done better than most dvd players costing a lot more. Thats because ps2 has a much more powerful engine than most dvd payers.
PS accounts for over 1/2 the money sony makes. mega buck dvd players are made in small numbers. So the economy of scale kicks in.
All for 250$.
My understanding is that the PS2 is going to run closer to $350 and is not going to be progressive. I also do not think that the PS/PS2 is 1/2 of Sony's market, they are one of the largest TV makers in the world and they are in many markets (home audio, music recording, car audio, home video, computer, movie, communications and so on). The economy of scale applies to everything they make, including their own DVD players. I do belive that the PS2 will make a great DVD player, however I do not believe it will be any better than Sony's or anyone else's players at the $200-$400 price points.
PS2 would be about 350$ list. So may be 300$ retail, after a while.From what I read, it will do progressive ... probably with a memory option.
But yes, they make loads more PS than progressive dvd players (if they make any at all).
Seriously, HTPC is the best progressive dvd player available today ... with custom configurable aspect ratios and number of lines. In fact you can use it as a scalar rivaling mega buck video processors / scalars. See the link below. All for under a grand.
yeah, PS2 is not half of sony's market, but it is cited as the force behind half the company's earnings last year fwiw. my take is that PS2 is going to be closer to $400 and it will be a middle of the road DVD player--good enough to tide you over until HD-DVD is introduced in 2-4 yrs (why anyone would want to spend a lot on a DVD player until then i've no clue). also, i agree with the thrust of this thread which has been implied but never stated: if you don't want to play any PS2 games, there's no sense in buying it. after a tough day in the office, tekken is just the thing for me, so i'm looking forward to the US introduction.
It'll play DVD's better than the S7700, it'll play CD's better than the new SCD-1! It'll cook dinner for you if you let it! 8^)Seriously though, I'm not really sure about its performance in those areas. I wouldn't want to play DVD's on it unless it had a remote, and who plays their CD's on a Playstation? It might give *ok* quality for CD playback, but most people at least one CD player in the house, no?
Now, the real reason to get a PSX2, the games! Supposedly they are just phenomenal. Microsoft's Xbox might throw another wrench into the equation though.

Do you know whether it puts out progressive ? Features list says 'DTV', whatever that is supposed to mean.
Hello,I wouldn't think that a $300 machine that has been out for a while in Japan would output progressive, but I'm not 100% positive on that. Regular progressive players are pretty new right now and pretty expensive too. My guess is no.
