hello out there...while i might be experienced in the world of audio, home theater is new for me. i have a panasonic dvd player with built-in dolby digital decoding, but my old sony receiver only supports pro-logic. to upgrade to full dolby digital, do i need a receiver that has dolby digital decoding built in, or a receiver that is only "dolby digital ready," meaning it has inputs for each of the 5.1 channels coming from the dvd's processor?
i'd like to spend as little as possible, but still get decent soundtrack quality--i plan on looking for small b&w's to pair with the receiver--any recommendations for a cheap but good "dolby digital ready" or regular dolby digital receiver?

Yes, all you'll need to get full Dolby Digital is a receiver that's DD-ready. However, you may not want to go that route even though some really killer deals can be found. Does your DVD player decode DTS? If it doesn't, then you're out of luck for DTS until you get a new receiver. All but the cheapest receivers have DD (and usually DTS) decoding. Those start at under $300 if you look around. I would save yourself the trouble and get a DD/DTS receiver.Regards,

for not too bad ht performance and 2ch music for the money it's a good purchase if for some reason you don't like Sony, Technics have some nice ht amps for a decent price. hope this helps you. i would stick with the amp doing the decoding then you can have your dvd and amp optically connected as opposed to using analog cables
