Help! Problems with new DVD player and TV!

Can anyone advise on what might be causing the following two problems?
1. When I play a DVD using the component video cables, I occasionally get some horizontal lines of a pinkish hue. They come and go, with the picture otherwise looking great. No problem when I use the S-Video connection. I replaced the component video cables and no difference. Since the equipment is a brand new Sony S7700 and brand new Wega 32XBR, I'm not willing to just go with the S Video cable and forget it. The dealer, Tweeter, will let me swap the DVD player next. If that doesn't work, then I guess it's the TV. Sheesh. Any suggestions?
2. I also have noticed, both with DVDs and VHS tapes, that the black bars on the top and bottom of a letter box movie are not perfectly horizontal, but slope a bit down from right to left. Not radically so, but noticably. Any way to adjust this, or is the TV shot? Gadzooks this is all very frustrating!
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise I guess I'm pushing Tweeter for a new DVD player and/or 175 pound T.V.!

The distortion in the letterbox bars is very likely due to poor adjustment of the picture's geometry. On most televisions the geometry adjustment is accessed only through the service menu, so I don't think you'd want to mess with this yourself .. and you'd void you warranty if you did.
Tell the dealer you want them to spring for a service tech visit to your home.
As far as the other distortion when using component cables... I have a similar problem myself when I use anything other than a co-ax connector. I've been told this is likely due to RF interference. Perhaps the cable is passing near a transformer in one of your home theater components. Or perhaps the cables pass near your in-wall electrical service line.

  Thanks for all of your suggestions.
  Here is what happened:
  The technician from Tweeter came by yesterday afternoon and adjusted the picture's geometry somewhat, both using a remote control and also by moving around the magnets on the CRT a bit. The result is a lot closer to perfect, but you can still notice a slight bow at the top and bottom (i.e. if watching a letter box movie) if you really look for it. The technician said that I probably wouldn't do any better with any other unit though, and I trust him. Anyway, I'm now satisfied, which is all that matters.
  As far as the horizontal discolored stripes, he made those totally go away. Mickey Bob, you may want to arrange for a similar visit, because this technician told me that the Sony Wegas have this problem with certain DVD players when they (the TVs) are set to their factory settings. He also said that no one really knew about this problem, or how to fix it, until quite recently. In any event, by simply adjusting one setting (using a remote that he brought with him), he made these "bars" go away entirely. It was quite cool to watch.
  He then spent quite some time adjusting color, hue, brightness, sharpness, grey scale, etc, etc, until the picture really seemed optimum. Pretty cool -- no charge at all, he just wanted to get it right. I'm now very happy with the component video connection. I've watched most of the scenes from the different movies that caused this problem to occur before, and they are all fine now.
  So, just in case anyone else reads this who has had similar problems with a Wega, it is fixable. You'll be happy with the results. Compared to the component video, the S Video connection seems a bit too bright (the color is overkill and not as subtle). Just my observations.

you're reporting using 4 different DVD players and 4 different TVs. Are you sure you've got the component connection hooked up correctly (it can be confusing for someone who has never done it before)?
Otherwise, sounds like you've got a problem with your TV or your player.

  I'm not sure what you mean by four different TVs and DVD players. So far I have used one DVD player only, with two TVs (my old Mitsubishi and the new Sony Wega). I have only noticed the problem with the off-colored lines with the component video cables hooked up to the Sony (the Mitsubishi had S Video only). I have tried two sets of cables (both Monster), and both were the same, so the problem is not in the cable. And yes, I did consider that I might not have hooked them up correctly, but I double checked it and they are all set up fine. The stripes come and go; otherwise everything looks great -- more realistic colors than with the S Video connection.
  In any event, Tweeter is sending a technician out to my apartment on Thursday afternoon to, I hope, fix both problems. I'll let you guys know how this gets resolved so that you'll know if you ever experience it yourselves.

I am running a Sony XBR36 and a Sony S530 DVD player.
I am using a monster brand component cable with no trouble. Just check all you connections and make sure there good.
Check your Sony TV settings. I believe you can adjust the "Tilt" of your screen.
Also run the digital audio cable if your system supports it.(Coax or optical) You will love the improvement in sound!
