I posted a note at Soundstage on this and got what I think was a wrong answer. It certainly was a condescending one, so I'd like to post it here and hopefully will get better responses.
I am considering a DVD player, but I do not own home theater speakers or receiver. I just want to use the DVD player as I use my VCR, ie run the sound through the television's speakers. Can I do this? I am considering the Pioneer DVD525. Doug Blackburn stated in his response to me that most DVD players do not have and RF output to permit this. Is that true? Does the 525?

You only want a DVD player for the interactive features? That would be the only advantage of owning one - using that type connection.

It sounds like you have an older TV which only has one input. The other suggests allow for adding a DVD player. You may wish to look at a new TV (say $500), the prices have dropped a lot. The picture quality is much better and nearly all have multiple inputs.

i had a similar problem but with my reciever. my t.v only has one input and it is for cable. so i went to the local radioshack and they showed me something a r/f modulator and that works fine. it has the
a/v inputs you plug into it and it converts it into what you will need.
although it did end up costing me thirty bucks. hope this helps

I've never seen a dvd player with an rf input/output. one thing that might work (if you don't have composite inputs on your tv) is an rf adaptor. I've seen them used to hook playstations up to older tv's without RCA inputs. Though you can get a new tv with at least composite (this is practically standard now, though S-video or component inputs are preferable) for not a whole lot of money these days.

If your TV has RCA inputs then the DVD will output the sound so your TV can use it. If your TV only has an antenna input the DVD will not work directly with it. I hope this helps. You might be able to feed the DVD sound thru your VCR to the TV. That will be a bit more complicated and will depend on the way the VCR works.
If you upgrade to a DVD you will soon want more.
