I've been watching old Avengers tv shows on This TV. Pretty lady but portrayed as slightly mysterious and her character wasn't developed much. I guess men wanted bimbos back then. I didn't mind though because Diana was captivating to watch.

Acting background with the Royal Shakespeare Company - much more than just a bimbo IMHO. ;-)

I don't think of her as a bimbo either.

Mr. Steed was the setup man. Very good role, well played.

Back then, few TV characters had much of a backstory, but maybe I wasn't paying much attention. For instance, I watched rawhide faithfully for years, but all I ever knew about the clint eastwood character was that he was the scout, and maybe fought in a war.

It could be that making her real would also be perceived as too threatening to many mindsets running TV back then, and a questionable ratings driver. Much like the thinking of a hot news lady is good for ratings, but get an asian, so she will not be seen as a sexual threat by wasp women. A seen, but, better not, heard deal.

I seem to remember sexual tension featured in the show, but with the male non sexual, the women off limits. He was fine with a cup of tea, while she went off screen to another life, presumably where she wore a lot of black leather while attending to things just as interesting as her time with the spies.

I am thinking Riggs was kept in the background because of the non liberated thinking of the time. Too bad they didn't know how to deal with a strong woman character back then. To me, the show only came alive when she hit the scene.

Of course, me being about thirteen at the time might also have had something to do with it. I thought the male lead dull. Fighting evil spys with a bumber shoot doesn't mean crap in a fantasy .

She was designed (peel) for a role that was popular with the menfolk. Roles like that she had were the norm. I kind of wish she had the strength of will that Stanwyck had in Big Valley, but Rigg did well as a beautifull spy lady (or some kind of secret agent).8

I tuned in JUST to see Diana Rigg! I thought the character of Steed was kind of a Fop and didn't quite measure up to the tension and excitement that Emma Peel brought to the show... I didn't know until recently that Honor Blackman was in the first season of the show... I must not have started watching until the 3rd or 4th season. Interesting that Blackman AND Rigg both went on to be Bond girls and Rigg of course became Mrs. James Bond. I JUST watched On Her Majesty's Secret Service recently for the first time. George Lazenby SUCKED as Bond. It's a shame that Sean Connery wasn't in that one, it would have been SO much better!

...Ms Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries on Acorn. There are four episodes running approximately 90 minutes each (released 2019).

Set in the 1960's, this Australian produced series his a tip-of-the-hat to the Avengers of old, including a police detective with the last name Steed (Joel Jackson) who Peregrine Fisher works with behind the official scenes to solve cases. Geraldine Hakewill, who portrays Ms Fisher, bears an uncanny resemblance to Diana Rigg and sells the role quite well.

The first episode introducing Peregrine Fisher is weakest because it takes awhile to establish her character's strengths, but each film gets better as does her character's confidence. While not comparable to the original Avengers in respect to cheeky asides, Ms Hakewill's character is totally charming and the series is quite fun to watch.

Cheers,
AuPh

There are several Actresses I liked better when they were older.
And they had the guts to BE older onscreen.

for a year I remember watching and loving Emma Peel and Leela from Doctor Who

For the time - it was enough to have a tough woman if only tough physically - The Doctor was always an interesting super hero kind of character as a general pacifist first approach so Leela - who always want to kill people.

Leela was Emma Peel in space to me.

Was there a mid 70's PBS late night short film and animation series hosted by Diana Rigg? I was known to imbibe at that time so not so sure.
Clearly remember The Avengers on TV a bit young to catch on to much nuance.

of Rebecca... She was quite good in it. Though NO ONE is as sinister as Dame Judith Andersen in the film... Rigg's performance was more "human" and approachable. I did REALLY like the girl that played Mrs. DeWinter in the TV version. She more approriately displayed the age difference between herself and Maxim.
