Amongst The Madness and disturbing, grey, cold, brilliance of this film is the constant
audio harangue of engine, furnace, machinery, horn, arco bass, sky, the sea, the sea,
the always restless sea, song, screaming, scuffling, moaning, grunting, gulls.

And more.

It's endless and as nuanced and critical to the total effect as the phenomenal cinematography
and incredible acting.

It's all so effective you can almost smell the dankness and stink and taste the saltwater and alcohol.

Lots to absorb and sort out by the end, starting with don't mess with seagulls.

A brilliantly bizarre and entrancing film.

They were only to be on the rock for a month. Then the weather got nasty and they couldn't be picked up. SO, how do two people go crazy in two months' time? Or, was it implied that supernatural forces were at play and their "visions" were reality?

wether supernatural (certainly could have been given The Light sequences and creepy crawlies),
or just madness let loose by the surroundings OR just plain bad luck (do NOT fuck
with seagulls!)... whatever, it became super-fueled by loads of alcohol that the Dafoe character
had ready to put to good use. It became pure alcoholic insanity.

I think he found the perfect mate to manipulate over the edge and was more than ready to join him.

Whatever spurred the utter madness of the film was meant to drive us veiwers mad too, and it's working.

Didn't think the black & white added anything to the production.

We jacked off, all the time, but we were USUALLY decent enough to just keep it to our "patrol socks."

These pathetic whiners were only there a MONTH. I did 105+ days SUBMERGED, and at the end of the patrol? 3 people went to court(s) martial, because they actually FED the crew, out of the ship's stores/freezer, after we'd been living on ketchup soup for a week.

They had a wave come crashing over & break the windows? We were at sea state 7+ in the North Atlantic, and even at XXX(X) feet, we were taking 45 degree rolls - to the point that our relief ship was delayed, because someone flew out of the rack, (while they were submerged at XXX feet, shattered his leg, and had to be "medivacced."

Yeah, this movie is just a couple of assholes, who can't otherwise get by in life, bitching about the fact that they have to work for a living, for a few weeks.

Alternate view? My wife liked it less than I did, but we both thought "Joker" was pretty awesome.

Will say? The actors did a great job, and they really do deserve some credit.

Like almost all the films discussed here.

Any submarine films you're particularly fond of?

Das Boot in original GERMAN, with subtitles.

And of Course, for an American Entry? Run Silent Run Deep must be on the short list, with an incredible cast.
The Bedford Indicent has MAJOR pucker factor and an awful ending
While
The Enemy Below certainly MUST be seen. Good cast, Good performances and an optimistic ending.

For the kid in 'ya? Disney production of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea with Peter Lorre, Kirk Douglas and many others.
Too much is never enough

Yep, pretty much "Das Boot" is the best of the bunch., posted on January 16, 2020 at 06:51:33

Though?

"Periscope Down" probably comes closest to portraying modern life on a sub. :P

was just 26 years old! Folks grew up fast in the first half of the 20th.

'Midway' caught my attention by pointedly showing the skipper and another hand smoking while submerged! Holy moly.

Have no idea what the policy is now, but? Smoking was permitted (albeit, only in designated areas) on the boats I served on.

Me? I was very much a NON-smoker! When I was a junior EM on my first sub? It really bugged me, having to clean the electrostatic precipitators that were just covered in tobacco smoke.

I finally saw it as well. WOW a great ride plus the sights and sounds were terrific (I agree)., posted on January 28, 2020 at 13:06:44
