 The story of Admiral Aleksandr Kolchak who was a professional "on message" officer and a Czar favorite. It follows his career beginning in The Great War and unashamedly focuses on his star-crossed romance with a fellow officer's beautiful bride.

This ten-episode series follows history through the struggle of Czarists against Bolsheviks in a compelling way.

Balanced between history and romance, this Russian corn-popper is compelling and may be of interest to the Little Lady.

(Oddly, this story showed the emphasis on religion during Czarist Russia.)

 We tried that one years ago, found it unwatchable, bailed out.

For someone interested in that chapter of Russian history I recommend the 2016 film "Kontributsiya" - but I don't know if it is available in translation.

Done in the typical Aratha Christie tradition it is quite entertaining, but even more interesting is the biography of its real life main character - General Pepelyaev.

The final chapters of his life were... oh, so typical of the regime, responsible for rivers of blood.

One of the ever popular subjects of heated discussion in Russian circles is: who was greater evil: Hitler or Stalin... my personal view is that Hitler was just a rank amateur.

 Did you see enough to get the heavy Orthodox vibe? Even made in '08 I thought it would have been toned down a bit.

 Enough to get the feel for it. Modern Russian serials are very predictable, after seeing enough of them you can quickly ascertain their quality level. They are mass-produced factory junk, not work of art, that has some complexity. In the recent months we probably started on several dozen of them... I think we actually finished 3-4 of them, with the rest you usually don't finish even the first episode.

 Yes - that part where they all stopped to pray together right in the middle of being attacked was interesting and surprising (and well done). I also felt that the production values (costumes, scenery, etc.) were good. However, the story itself seemed only soap-opera worthy overall, and the babes were definitely not my type! (BTW, I know I've seen - and heard (he's got a very identifiable voice) - that main guy in at least one other Russian production. I just can't remember where.) Anyway, it's probably not likely that I'll watch more.

However, I always appreciate your Netflix and Prime recommendations - I don't want to have to expend the time to surf through and find stuff for myself, and I find your reactions (and those of a few others here) a pretty reliable guide to worthwhile flicks to watch!

Perfectly put. That is exactly what bothers me in most of their "historic" films.

We recently turned off in disgust another such film, The Road to Calvary. That one was particularly shameful, because the original film from 1957 was quite good and universally loved.

 outweighed the factual history part of the story. In fact, I found the love story implausible unless OCD is a natural Russian trait.
