A young merchant seaman with dreams of writing falls for the beautiful daughter of a wealthy family. Seemingly willing to give him a chance if he will accept a position through a family friend, the family unites against him when he refuses and remains committed to his goal. As his opinions and actions become more and more political, his relationship also comes under stress.

Based on a Jack London novel and relocated to Italy, this is a brilliant piece of filmmaking that takes us deep into the character of a man who refuses to be "corrupted" by the wealthy or by labor movements, instead passionately arguing and writing for the rights of the individual.

Luca Marinelli, in the principal role, should --right now-- be awarded an Oscar. He is brilliant. His portrayal could have degenerated into heroic gestures, but instead convincingly presents us a flawed, complex man.
