with some of the more realistic war scenes you've ever seen. Several platoons of former criminals become skilled at silent, throat-slashing nighttime attacks against the Turks and Germans. This hand-to-hand combat, wherein no prisoners are taken, takes a toll on them off the battlefield where, finally, their violent crimes against civilians cannot be tolerated by commanding officers. Consider this more of a thinking man's war film and you should find much to like, including the startlingly realistic performance of the lead, Philippe Torreton.

I just saw it several weeks ago and also was impressed with the battle scenes. Watched all of his films currently on Criterion that week, including Coup de Torchon which I had previously seen.

Couldn't help noticing all the films seemed to be centered on death!

Making my way through them, now. I'd also only seen , posted on March 7, 2021 at 08:48:32

"Coup de Torchon," previously. Noiret is a great actor and their collaboration...
