Early review of Netflix's, "The Serpent." This film very (too?) realistically

depicts a truly amoral and depraved murderer preyed on, usually, hippie types wandering about the Far East.
The lead actor is so realistic you feel like you need a bath after watching him "work." Supporting actors also are fine; the suspense is unusual because the writers made the victims true individuals: you care about them.

So far, high recommendation (about half way through).

Entertaining as hell, and I mean it just about literally. nt, posted on April 7, 2021 at 11:27:04

I've enjoyed the two episodes I've watched so far, but the constant skipping back and forth in time is tiresome.

Agreed on the timeline bouncing back and forth. I think it's done a little too often. I'm still enjoying it after 5 episodes in. Although I'm not sure if "enjoying" is the right word. That's one evil dude.

I think "bouncing" was a good decision because the time frame is just so incredibly long. "Evil?" , posted on April 8, 2021 at 12:30:18

This guy is pure evil. I was one of those hippie types, though through S and C America for a six-month period. Met several guys that were creepy, though I don't imagine too many were actual serial killers :-)...

This started out great and didn't disappoint. Great reco (daughter recommended it the same day you posted), posted on April 10, 2021 at 19:43:10

You're right about feeling the need for a cleanse after watching Alain/Charles' character brought to life by Rahim. Now I gotta see him in The Mauritanian

Decades ago I read the book written about Charles Sobrhaj called Serpentine, which was great. All this time later, I only dimly recalled his actions.

I did enjoy this series. I also thought there was too much time shifting for no great reason. But I guess on the docudrama scale, I found this tilted a bit too heavily on the drama, i.e. fictionalized to tell a story.

The whole thing about the Dutch diplomat investigating against his supervisor's wishes, well, this is pretty much a cliche in many cop stories. Was it real? I have no idea, but it felt like fiction. Other highly suspenseful moments seemed a bit too cinematic. And all the dialogue was made up.

It is however an interesting story and quite well done with the actors and settings. I'm sure there is little to no video of those people in those times, so a true documentary is probably not possible. Docudrama is OK, but I did like the book and I see now that there is at least one other book that has come out as well.

See him in, "A Prophet." This really is a hard-hitting crime film. nt, posted on April 11, 2021 at 11:49:44
