 This came up on my Farcebook news feed, a note from the Shared Beringian Heritage Program (address attached below): "... why not enjoy a bit of Soviet cinema history this Monday? The Soviet film, The Chief of Chukotka (Начальник Чукотки) (1967), is set in 1922, and follows a young and idealistic Soviet citizen, Alyosha, who unexpectedly finds himself in charge of building socialism in Chukotka when his superior dies suddenly. While Alyosha dreams of undertaking large construction projects, such as building a planetarium (pictured), he quickly runs into many problems. American and Japanese traders plying the waters, a cadre of aristocrats loyal to the Tsar, and a mercenary regional clerk, all present obstacles to Alyosha, who is eventually forced to flee across the Bering Strait to Alaska before making his way to San Francisco. For Americans, this sequence presents an interesting opportunity to see a 1960's Soviet vision of the United States in the 1920's. For all viewers, this film is an opportunity to consider how films with historical settings contribute to our understanding of past, both as sources for the years in which they were made, and they time periods they purport to tell us about. The film can be viewed on Youtube in Russian with automatically-generated subtitles in English. To enable English subtitles, first ensure subtitles are turned on by clicking the "CC" button at the bottom on the video. Then, click the gear-shaped button at the bottom of the video to open the settings menu. Click "Subtitles/CC", then click "Auto-Translate" and select the language you would like subtitles to appear in. Be aware, automatic translation is prone to errors!"
