costuming, and acting: no French film ever made as much of brazen philandering! The great director George Cukor ("My Fair Lady," "The Philadelphia Story," "Gaslight,""A Star is Born") assembled an all-star cast: John Barrymore, Lionel Barrymore, Marie Dressler, Jean Harlow, Wallace Beery--- and the most beautiful and talented actress I'd never heard of, Helen Morley (Mrs. Talbot). This is 1933, and you get a very palpable feel for the Depression--- and the hostility between the classes it amplified. One actress in a minor role, whom I've never seen before, is excellent: keep your eyes out for Jean Harlow's maid: she just about steals every scene from Jean. Criterion Channel. For those who enjoy Lubitsch, this film is just as good as his best...
