Forbidden Planet MUST figure in all this, no?

Just saw 'Transatlantic Tunnel' from 1935 ......WAY ahead of its time......and a movie I'd never heard of before. 1935!

The Alastair Sim version is good, but I tend to prefer the 1930s version starring Reginald Owen and a YOUNG Gene Lockhart.....
Something about the honesty of presentation gets me....

  • Zardoz (greatest film of all time - "The penis is evil!")
  • The original Indian Jones Trilogy (Raiders, Temple of Doom*, Last Crusade)
  • The Indiana Jones supplement (i.e., Crystal Skull - you don't agree? Bring it on!)
  • Any fantasy film with music by Bernard Herrmann (Journey to the Center of the Earth, 7th Voyage of Sinbad, etc.)

*Any movie with a kid saying a line like, "You call him DOCTOR Jones, DOLL!" will forever be on my list!

Thanks. Zardoz is on my list. Not sure why I've never seen it. Good thing I can get dvds of most movies from our library system.

Re: Alastair Sim version, the additional story line expanding on what Dickens wrote helped me to better understand how Scrooge became the monster he was before the spirit visitations. Sim does get a bit over the top at times, but I'm able to overlook that.

Forbidden Planet would be on my list of science fiction movies. For me, Blade Runner. takes the lead of must see flics in that genre. Transatlantic Tunnel is a new one for me, I'll check it out. Thanks.

All the 'categories' are to me, somewhat offputting.

is something like the Gene Wilder take on Willie Wonka a fantasy?

So I'm less concerned with calling something 'X' or 'Y' than simply 'Is it well done?'

My brother didn't like SciFi. I couldn't get him to sit thru Forbidden Planet! 'THEM' was out of the question. Yet he found 'The Martian' to be engaging.

The reason I find categories weird is I can't figure out where MANY movies fit. For example? Clint Eastwood did 'Unforegiven'. Western? Morality play? Fantasy, even? Historical Drama?

Directors Cut of Blade Runner is terrific. That my be yet ANOTHER category: 'Dystopian Future'. Stuff like Arnie in Running Man (the?) and Idiocracy (funny stuff) both qualify.

No, for ME, categories is a tough sell. Just entertain me!

Not a big fantasy film fan. Must say I really like Wings of Desire. Never thought of it as a fantasy film, but I guess it must be...

Also really like The Red Shoes.

Star Wars Saga (especially #'s 3,4,5,6,7 & 9)
Raiders Saga (all but especially 1 & 3)
Wizard Of OZ (any movie with Garland)
The Fifth Element (shame he never did the planned follow-up)
A Christmas Carol ( I especially like the George C Scott, Sim and the fabulous Albert Finney musical)
Harry Potter series (especially 1,2 & 7. Richard Harris was a GREAT Dumbeldore!)
Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder version... Johnny Depp was a waste of film)
Batman (Tim Burton's but take out the God awful Prince music! Michelle Pfeiffer is the HOTTEST thing to EVER wear spandex!)
Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews.. my first movie star crush!)
The Spiderwick Chronicles
Beauty and the Beast (both versions)
Aladdin (both versions)
Cinderella (both versions but especially the live action with the beautiful Lily James and the TV movie musical with the beautiful Lesley Ann Warren)
Excaliber
Ghost
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Jungle Book (both versions)
The Bishop's Wife (LOVE Cary Grant in ANYTHING!)
It's A Wonderful Life (the Jimmy Stewart AND the Marlo Thomas versions)

All Miyazaki ("Spirited Away"); "Zardoz:" Connery brilliant in mind-altering role/film. Also, strong, posted on September 12, 2021 at 07:22:14

"Solaris" must be on any "greatest Sci-Fi" lists, I'd argue. Only the original Russian one.

. . . it crosses the genre into "gladiator movies". I guess there are certainly enough fantasy elements though to make it a valid choice for the fantasy genre.

"Joey, do you like. . . gladiator movies?" ;-)

nice! I think the original had better pacing and actors ... the effects were better in the re-do though neither film gets props for those

I agree that the original She was very good
