 lauded as the new great film auteur. "Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy" and "Drive My Car" both released over this one-year period------- and neither available for streaming or in theaters here in the good ol' USA. Well, I guess that's one way to force people into watching the endless stream of infantile sequels, prequels, and whatevers.

 What does it mean? Well, Drive my Car is a movie about words. Consequently, it is built on conversation. Not as explicitly as My Dinner with Andre, but probably far too much for the average moviegoer. The action, such as it is, is all but nonexistent. Yes, the police show up once.

I found much to chew on. It is no spoiler to say this movie is about stories that are told by people, from Chekhov to the individual stories we carry about events in our lives. So while it is not explicitly exciting during its 3 hour runtime, it has stuck with me.

 "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains."
That, and "An Elephant Sitting Still," are the two best films I've seen in years. Sadly, I could only watch the magnificent "Fuchun" on my computer screen (no streaming service, yet)--- it's really beautifully filmed and must be striking on a theater screen--- the film references one of China's most well-known scroll paintings.

 Thanks did a quick check online and these are older movies, so these would not be available in screener versions. Elephant is widely available to rent on streaming services. So will check it out. The other one, not yet.

 Brilliant acting, complex yet profound interweaving plot, dramatic intensity. Startlingly original--- what a pity the director committed suicide not long after it was released...
