What REALLY happened the day Franz Joseph and Sophie met their demise? This film takes recorded history and provides its own unrecorded history to fill in the blanks. It creates an air of political expediency and subterfuge we see every day in our modern lives. This Austrian/Czech film is beautifully filmed with a cast of characters that are, by our standards, dead-pan in their delivery. Perhaps this lends gravity and credibility to what the film has to say. There are amazing parallels drawn between 1914 and other more modern assassinations. Like: the parade root being changed, almost no police on duty, and how did a few Serbian students get the money to buy the pistols and bomb-making materials? It seems the answer to these questions go further upstream, back to Germans who have a business plan that Serbia will never agree to implement. Lush, frank, and provocative, this is a film that history buffs will enjoy. Not a big popcorn movie but one that prods the gray matter.
