The most excellent and brutal war movie ever made in my opinion; 1998, based on an autobiographical novel by James Jones, of the Battle of Guadalcanal, told from introspective narratives from various soldiers in one of the most deadly war campaigns.

This is not some John Wayne garbage. You won't hear anyone yelling Hoo-rah!
"War makes men dogs; poisons the soul." No need for popcorn; you probably won't feel like eating.

Currently showing on Cinemax, carried by Comcast cable.

The Zen like balance of the horrors and wonder of mankind dueting with the beauty and wonder of nature is entrancingly disturbing.

which got the most out of performances by Sean Penn, Woody Harellson, Nick Nolte and of course Jim Caviezel.
Beauty and horror, in equal measure.

Jones' works in the series show a deep cynicism about humanity.

And, an even deeper disdain for people, especially NCO's and Orificers, who don't measure up.

For fellow Privates, who eventually fail, he has much more compassion.

I was rivetted by the series, when I first read them. Enjoy would not be an appropriate term.

is, IMO, the perfect score for this film too. Highly recommend it.

I also remember it as a very realistic film that is gripping with tension.

If I recall, this came out about the same time as "Saving Private Ryan," which won most of the awards. I watched Ryan once and haven't had the desire to do so again. I watch "Thin Red Line" every time it's on HBO or whatever, and have recorded it. Agree with the comment about the score. Nick Nolte should have won something for his performance.

One of my buddies had a dad who served in the marines in that battle. Still had yellow fever at times with night sweats and hallucinations for the rest of his life.

Now some people of soldering age consider it pointless to vote, the rich get all the rewards, with trillions in loans so the rich can pay even less in taxes, even if the votes were honest. They see a computer voting machine, and they are not dummies, they grew up with computers.

I couldn't find an edit feature but wanted to correct my above statements. I made the illness seem like a passing bad dream. In reality the relapse sometimes took some time.
