"On Body and Soul", Hungary, 2017.

Mesmerizing... it is so nice to know that somewhere, someone still knows how to make truly great movies.

Available on Netflix.

And here we are discussing... La La Land?

Blood, guts, boobs, sex all are present. Including animal sex.

Don't now fall all over yourself running for that TV! :)

I spent two summers in the Zakarpatie region, which used to be their territory, and everyone spoke Hungarian (magyar), rich in fruit and wine. I developed if not love, then at least some appreciation of their culture, the sound of their language - a unique one... loosely related to Finnish and Japanese plus some other more obscure ones.

There were some Hungarian movies shown in the USSR, mostly dealing with political struggle and war, and I remembered some names and faces.

I am not too familiar with the current situation in Hungary, but they were the first (OK, maybe the second, after Yugoslavia...) to show Moscow their finger, and one of the first after WWII to have communist bloodshed in their streets.

One thing for sure - the list of great Hungarian directors has just grown from one to two.

I really liked the hypnotic pace and the metaphor of the lonely buck chasing the female to no avail. And yes, there were boobs! (They could have actually not gone there and the film would have been the same.)

PS. The nature cinematography was some of the best.

...just how they managed all those deer shots. Truly poetic, and almost a film in itself.

Give me the link to your posts. I did a search on title and it came back with nothing.

Not the nationalist opposition.

I did some reading on Hungary, and was surprised to see that high tech represents 25% of its export!

I think your rating was far too low, perhaps not enough libation that evening? I enjoyed virtually every minute of it. The main male character was just too superb, especially considering he is not an actor at all.

All in all, movie making of highest order, with poetry and reality so tightly intertwined. One of those that you watch on one single breath with no bathroom breaks, with its 116 minutes flying by unnoticed.
