I don't know if any of you like these kind of listings (usually reserved for cars), but I found this entertaining to scroll through. It's a compilation of capsule reviews of recent movies that lost cash big time.

I have seen many of these and mostly thought they were good enough to waste my time, but I had no idea that they cost this kind of green, or how much was not recovered. I was very surprised to see Bladerunner, 2049 included. Making movies is really a gambler's game. Lots of insider politics and deal making involved.

Its a wonder movies still exist at all, judging by this listing. Enjoy.

most of which is not a surprise it failed.

Most of those had inflated budgets due to technical (read tech) costs
that likely spiraled out of control because tech folk can bullshit better
than anyone these days, and non-tech folk fall for the bullshit because...
THEY JUST DON''T KNOW. And it's NEW. GROUNDBREAKING.

'mI sure the accountants involved have equally groundbreaking techniques.

Haven't seen most of those but might watch one when it streams, free
and I'm looking for something mindlessly entertaining.

Like last night I started Valerian, which is mega recycled STAR WARS shit with very
non-likable leads just for starters. I will never finish it and was just too tired to
get off the couch so got stuck with an hour of it. If I had to guess I'd say 80% of
that list would have the same effect on me. 10% might be good. 10% you'd have to
cut off a finger to get me to watch.

BR2049 was brilliant, that it lost money IS a surprise.

There will ALWAYS be movies, TOO much money floating around for potential
producers NOT to invest, PLENTY of bad scripts, LOTS of infrastructure for the
industry and bad actors are more plentiful than good baristas.

Frequently they are the same person.

Ever notice HOW many production "companies" are involved in any typical Netflix (for example)
production these days? Hell, there most be dozens of companies producing 1 minute
graphic designs for them all that have long waiting lists.

The Hollywood stardom/mingle draw seems to remain strong, and you know they
will take ANYONE'S money to get a "production" going.

Hollywood just seems to be The Producers, Get Shorty and The Player all
re-edited and jumbled into one long loop.

Soon to come?

IMO, the short list o best movies, regardless of genre, are about people.

Relationships, abilities (special and otherwise) and situations which you can identify with.

You have to be interestd in these people even IF you can't quite identify with them.

You might look at the ENGLISH language version of 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo'. with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. Well cast, good chemistry, engaging plot and a MYSTERY, the solution of which I Doubt you'll see coming.

But the scene for scene remake of 'Psycho'? A waste of natural resources. Awful.

The list of really BAD movies bombing at the box office is pretty long.
Some real money makers are on this list.....Eddie Murphy / Dustin Hoffman / Warren Beaty /

Some of the really bad ones went nearly 200$Million in the red.

But yet, I like a few of 'em, but not necessarily for why the producers thought I would. I love 'BattleField Earth'. Really terrible and based on the L.Ron Hubbard book. But the real corker is John Travolta (a scientologist) and Forest Witaker ISN'T.
I laugh at all the wrong things and the over the top performance by Travolta should have earned him a lifetime achievement Razzie.
Battlefield Earth got 5 'razzie' nominations and won several......

And yes, most of what is made today IS crap. Recycled scripts. Poor production values. Who told Natalie Portman she could act?
Too much is never enough

Its a precarious place, but seems to always be where movie production sits. Any movie.

Persuading actors with name-draw that people are familiar with, the "stars", to participate is part of the strategy to pull in viewers, helping to make a profit. But this handful of folks is small, and they get huge sums to join in. So the dance into the black isn't guaranteed by including marquee stardom.

The story/script part seems really tricky to pull off, so the same trick is employed as with adding the big-name actors. Use a story, or previous film theme, that was successful before. Example: the A Star is Born retreads. Or go the infinite sequel route.

I just look at the title and who's in it. Works every time. Nt, posted on February 3, 2019 at 13:17:44

With The Irishman you have former box office top stars combined with a former great director
for a film that is already famous for reaching an astronomical production budget that has yet
to include marketing/hype and distribution.

Ten or so years ago it sounded like a movie with serious potential.

As each year goes by, it just seems like something already... done.

And somewhere in that mix of ego, talent, work, strife, and possibly
art, someone expects it will make money?

Questionable.

And I like all involved.

I had a friend enrolled for awhile in the U. of Michigan Business School, that they less-than-affectionately called Bisney School.

I thought he was referring to the mandatory dress code, but could be reference to some of the billiard-shot practices they taught. Must be a highly recruited set of skills.

But I dislike superhero/comic book/ fantasy crap. I do remember seeing Depp as Tonto and liking him. Saw the film on HBO or somewhere. Don't remember anything but Depp being good.
