Recently watched the latest offering by director Guss Van Sant. It is his usual quirky type film based on the life of one John Callahan. The film mostly takes place in Portland Oregon. It has a bit of pre Portlandia to it. Main character is played by Joaquin Phoenix.
The young adult Callahan is a practicing alcoholic and is in a auto accident that leaves him a paraplegic. A combination of pity me and more drinking finally lands in in a AA meeting.
We then follow his evolution for that point to a functioning member of the community and noted cartoonist.
I generally like the films by Van Sant and the acting of Phoenix. It takes place in a city I lived in with scenes of familiar points, so that played into my liking this one. It is available on disc at Netflix.

I usually can't stand Jonah Hill or Jack Black but they were good in this. A sleeper hit imo nt, posted on February 17, 2019 at 12:07:00

Agree 100%. I am guessing working for Van Sant had a lot to do with first taking small parts, and fitting the character given.
