The little bit of research I've done seems to indicate that broadcasters may be headed in the direction of a soundbar solution to immersive audio. This makes perfect economic sense, and suggests to me that all of the HT equipment being sold to support immersive audio will be junk in two or three years. Just sayin'...

I'm not clear on what you're "just sayin."

As long as your HT processor can decode the format, it can process it to use the number of speakers your HT system has. Even higher order ambisonics (HOA) formats like Dolby Atmos or Auro-3D can be processed to use a Dolby 5.1 system. You don't get all of the immersive benefits, but your HT equipment is hardly outdated.
