I was happy at 40mbps, picture quality was fine, no problems.

On a lark I bumped up to 100mbps. OMFG. The difference in picture quality is off the scale. It's like I just bought an OLED tv.

I'd say for really high quality streaming 100mbps is a good place to start.

It should work better going from 40 to 100 is more than double.

Interesting. An hour of streaming, high quality, HD video is about 2GB, give or take. In theory, you'd need around 70mbps if my math is right.

I've got 50mbps service and I've noticed that it varies from pretty much DVD quality to fairly bad sometimes. Drop outs on the sound also happen from time to time. I need to go in to the Cox store and do the 'cut my bill' routine and get upgraded as well. I had HBO and Showtime for free and rarely use it, but now am getting charged and don't need it. If I bitch, I'll get it free again and get the bill cut 30% with faster internet. It's such a game.

Also keep in mind that if you are getting your internet from a cable company or fiber optic company, your bandwidth is going to be shared by every house around you that is using that same service\speed, so you may notice better or worse speeds depending on home many people are home and using their services for whatever. Going with a higher speed service that costs more money will probably mean that fewer people around you have that service and will make your personal bandwidth that much better. Or maybe consider fiber optics over cable for the same reason, if most people in your neighborhood are not using fiber.
