There are three 'prestige' brands that everyone knows, Sony, LG, Samsung.

There are three 'upstart' brands, Hisense, TKL, Vizio. The major brands are making one terrible decision after another. LG is selling the same panels they used in 2016. Samsung's 2019 sets are not as good as their 2018 sets. Sony's best set was three years ago.

I saw a 65" 4k TKL set yesterday for $500. I got news for you... I think the Japanese and Korean companies are about to have done to them what they did to Sylvania, Magnavox, etc. I think the upstarts are going to clobber the prestige brands. Hisense has a new 'high end' set with quantum dots coming out in June... 65" 4k, $999.

Wouldn't surprise me if Sony was out of the tv market in a few years. Someone get a mop, there's going to be blood on the ceiling.

But, I see Samsung already with a QLED lineup, prices not too bad.

Yeah, but those cheap Chinese sets have poor reliability. I have actually seen some at the store with the back lights going out. Doesn't speak well for long time use in your home. My Panasonic plasma still looks great after 12 years of heavy use. I imagine Sonys are in for the long haul too. LG and Samsung have had some reliability issues, but not like the crappy Chinese sets.

Sony is loosing money in the tv market and is only staying in it because leaving it would be a huge blow to their prestige.

That's what I read in the trades, anyway.

Not sure I'd call "Hisense" an "upstart" - they've been making TVs since before 1979!, posted on May 28, 2019 at 09:24:23

Though?

No I hadn't particularly heard of them until the last few years.

Saw a post on an undocumented sale of 50" Hisense 4k tvs a few years back. Was $229 at walmart.com with a particular code, back when every other 4k tv of the size was more like $500 to $900 at their best sales.

Figured I couldn't go wrong, placed an order online for in store pickup & drove to my local Wally World with my paperwork.

People in store couldn't believe it was legit, as the TV was selling for $550+ on the shelf, but sure enough? They scanned my bar codes, determined I'd paid for it, and they grabbed me a unit out of the back.

Have used it for about the last 5 years & have been VERY happy with performance and picture quality. Reliability? No issues at all to this point, but if it craps out? Think I did damn well for under $250!
