HD antenna to HDMI for primetime shows

 High Guys,

We're looking to cut the cable and go streaming but we like the local ABC CBS NBC channels for local news and some primetime shows. I also enjoy at least stereo and preferably Dolby D that cable broadcasts.

How is anyone here doing that and is it even possible? Is dolby broadcast over the air?

We have an older Samsung smart TV with coax in. But could by a separate box with HDMI output.

 Simply type in your zip code and find out which Over the air channels are available and what type of antenna is needed.
Depending on location, sometimes a small powered indoor antenna works for major networks and worth trying (buy from place with easy return policy).

 I have been able to get quite a few HD stations with a simple wire hanging out of the 75 Ohm connector on the back of my Samsung and LG-

Based on that success, I hooked up a 'TV Specific' antennae to the LG and get about 4 flavors of each major channel and an additional 40+ of UHF style stuff...

 I just ordered a cheap 30 buck indoor antenna to give it a try. I'm hoping to run it into the TV and the TV's toshlink output to the receiver and get at least stereo. This will save us 100.00 a month for the few major network channels we watch.

 Your tv should have some kind of digital out, usually optical cable. Basically you need something compatible with your avr. Newer tv's have hdmi arc which is hdmi audio output but your avr must be newer to accept it. Everything over the air is usually at least Dolby digital 5.1 including the news.

Depending on where you live you may be able to get away with a cheap antenna but if you're a bit out of range or have hills a good antenna is a must. This is the best indoor/outdoor antenna you can get without going to a huge outdoor antenna.

 We haven't cut the cable yet but some of our TVs are "over the air" only fed by a HDTV antenna.

My first HDTV experience was in 2004 when 9News in Colorado broadcast our State's first ever HDTV signal. The preliminary setup had their transmitting antenna on top of a high rise building (not that high up) in downtown Denver. I needed a decent outdoor antenna pointed at Denver to pickup the signal. Back then TV's didn't have a built-in HDTV tuner like your Samsung. I had to buy a $300 external HDTV tuner from BestBuy to hookup to my Sony XBR Trinitron CRT TV.

We are pretty fortunate now that most of our Denver area broadcasters share a massive transmitting antenna high atop Lookout Mountain in Golden CO that overlooks the entire Denver Metro area. With all signals coming from one location we don't have to worry about repositioning our antenna for best reception of each station.

Connect the antenna coax to your Samsung. If the over the air broadcast is in surround sound your Samsung will decode it out of its HDMI eARC port (or Toslink optical port). In a few cases the over the air HDTV broadcasts will actually look sharper than what comes over our CableTV which is especially nice for live sports. We get all local network stations like ABC, NBC, CBS, two PBS, and more plus all the sub-channels with old shows. I like X-Files reruns on Comet TV.

 You can run one cable from the antenna to an HD Homerun or Tablo and connect to a wifi router to watch from any tv in the house with an app. They also have hard drives for recording. The new ones have the new atsc 3.0 tuners but nothing in the works to broadcast 4k over the air yet.
