"The Ripper." Specifically, this Netflix documentary is

about the Yorkshire Ripper. It explores in depth the huge and unprecedented police effort that chased this vicious and clever killer--- yet, he avoided detection for five years. Though clues were few-and-far between, they perhaps could have led to his earlier capture--- but for some incorrect police assumptions. Police, reporter, and victim-and-victim family interviews lie at the heart of this fascinating glimpse of that area of England, and how daily life was victimized over such a long period.

As is common these days in many of these shows, little attention is given over to trying to analyze or understand the killer; partly, because it unavoidably makes them more "important," and partly because there is nothing exceptional about them except their crimes. This beast was a seemingly ordinary, married truck driver, notable only because he was exceptionally shy in social settings.

Why bother investing in this four-part mini, then? For me, I found the details of the police procedures fascinating; the politics also were eye-opening. For those who are more interested in gory details, I'd look elsewhere. After an interview with one forensic expert regarding one murder, specifics are left out.
