'Foxcatcher': Old Money Crazy . . .

Dry and creepy sums it up from my seat. When leaving a few of the local well-breds were straggling out bantering about the film. "I feel so down I should be crawling out of here" said a forlorn matron. There was nearly a entire row of meat heads sitting behind me. When the screen went black the first time one asked, "Is the movie over?", in a hopeful tone. Sitting through this was like being in detention or hanging around a funeral home.

Despite the Debbie Downerisms this was an excellent film that exuded the creepy, crazy world DuPont had created for his world class athletes of which the Schultz brothers became part of. Carrell put forth an excellent caricature of DuPont as an emotionally stunted and obsessive man channeling his energies into what his mother termed a "low sport". Tatum played Mark Schultz as beefed and dour Olympian looking to be his own man while Ruffalo played the more affable, together brother who was happily married.

As the story plays, DuPont comes unexpectedly unhinged and strikes out at David. We can only surmise, from the film, that he was greatly upset over David's unwillingness to give credit to John for everything.

If this was a well-researched script (we must presume it was) there was definitely all kind of red flags flying from Jon and David. The story was deliberately slow-paced adding a sense of dryness. The musical score added to a low-key feeling of creepiness--well done. The overall production elicited an 'In Cold Blood' vibe. Yes, I appreciated the film and the story but won't be sitting through a second viewing any time this year.

Carrell was good but Oscar?
