'The Blackcoat's Daughter': Suspenseful, artsy, compelling . . .

This is the story of Kat, Rose, and Joan, who are drawn into a fight with demonic forces over a long, dark winter's break at an all-girls Catholic school. Rose and Kat have been forgotten by their parents forcing them to stay at Bramford School after all the other girls have gone home.

Rose (Lucy Boynton, 'Sing Street', total babe) is a senior who was reluctantly assigned to watch over Kat (Keirnan Shipka, 'Mad Men'). Rose has a few issues on her mind and watching over Kat is not one of them.

The story develops slowly, methodically with an interesting use of mixed timelines. This brings Joan (Emma Roberts) into the mystery with James Remar and Lauren Holly. As the film progresses there are a lot of clues thrown out telegraphing what's next but most people will miss half of them. (I watched it a second time the next day to check them off.)

The premise follows Kat's loss of family and her struggle to find an attachment to take their place. Rose has boyfriend matters to take care of and Joan joins the fun beyond the halfway point. It all turns out rather devilishly. The atmosphere of the film had me feeling as if I had just watched a b&w film! That's effective.

Shipka is a strange young lady with a ton of presence. She is confident and comes off as a Dakota Fanning-type. Lucy Boynton has such great bone structure it was difficult for me to look elsewhere. Emma Roberts played clean-up hitter and brought the story to completion, although, the film was all about Shipka and Boynton.

Mysterious, creepy, and some bloody horror are thrown in for the splatter aficionados. Apparently, this never made a wide release (shame) and I snagged it at Red Box.
