Need help with Japanese DVD recorder "bitstream" recording input

I recently bought a semi-pro Japanese DVD NTSC recorder (Pioneer DVR-2000) that has two inputs that I haven't been able to figure out: one is called a wave detector input and the other is labeled bit-stream input. Both are coaxial type inputs and are grouped in a section marked "BS Decoder" in the manual. The bit-stream input is tied to a set of s-video and coaxial video inputs.
The recorder is capable of recording Dolby Digital as well as PCM SP/DIF audio. The standard audio inputs are analog-type; most U.S. DVD recorders do not have digital audio inputs due to copyguard restrictions; but as this is a Japanese-only model I suspect that it might possibly accept a digital input.
Does anyone know if the bit-stream input will accept the digital bit-stream audio output from a standard DVD player? I suspect that it might but am hesitant to make the connection as I might inadvertently damage the unit. Anyone help from someone familiar with this particular recording protocol will be most greatly appreciated!
