RE: looking for a good (($500) TV hard drive (DVR) with tuner

I use a couple of HDHomerun boxes with cable cards, but they also have tuners for OTA. Their HDHomerun app is available for Andriod TV or another one, Channels for Apple TV. Silicon Dust has released a free DVR function in the latest version. One HDHomerun has 2 tuners and can steam to any device/TV with an app, so you could watch on 2 TVs or watch while recording another show.

I use the boxes and Windows Media Player for the DVR. Recordings are then processed with MCEBuddy and Comskip to convert the files to mp4 without commercials. Then, I use Kodi for viewing on Google Nexus Android boxes. The Nvidia Shield is the best Android box as sadly, Google quit on their Nexus boxes and are focusing on ChromeCast. You can still find them on eBay for $50-100 and Google Store has lots of free apps for HBO, ABC, CBS. Thier Netflix app is great.

Kodi has ports for Apple and Amazon too. For Android, the SPMC fork of Kodi is better IMO.

The HDHomerun solution is slick and has many ways to implement it, but it's not a simple plug and play. Not that it's difficult. It's just that you have multiple choices and ways to ingrate it all.

Their forums are quite helpful with a lot of experienced users.
